Welcome to the Jungle

I was commissioned by On That Ass (great name) last year to illustrate a seamless jungle scene for them to produce a textile pattern for their underwear. It's a cool subscription model and they do a great job promoting their products. Can't wait to see how they package up my version.

I was given the theme of magical forest - I ended up pushing more toward jungle - wanted to really dig in to finding some cool creatures to put in that could sit over an intricate, mostly green backdrop. As I was researching I stumbled upon a lot of cool jungle fungi and decided to add that as well to bring some more magic to it.

Really loved the challenge of creating something that would tile without feeling too much like a repetitive pattern or show really cleanly where the edges were - felt like this composition did a good job of that - if there was too much of a focal point it would make the larger pattern too mathematical - so offsetting the main characters lets it read more like a complex jungle when you see it wider.
The final color illustration - the illustration was done in Photoshop, then converted to vectors and all the color work was done in Illustrator.
The 3 sketches I started with - from not understanding what they were looking for to the tight version that was inked and finished. (All the thanks to Wessel van Hoof for art directing me to the finish line.)
Short video that demonstrates the seamless pattern.
