My first assignment in Poster Design & Illustration was to create a mock concert poster for a band. I wanted to use a band that was somewhat quirky to fit my penchant for drawing characters that are out of the ordinary, so I decided on an experimental pop/indie rock band called Yeasayer.
I already knew that the composition was going to be weird, especially since I researched on posters that had been made for the band in the past, but I wanted it to still correlate somehow and not just be a strange motif on a page. My favorite song by Yeasayer is called "Tightrope" & I thought it would be fun to play around with the title of the song as well as a lyric from it that goes: "So you think you can solve all your problems by yourself?" From that, I imagined a character with his problems accumulating so much on him that they became mountains on his back. On top of that, he's high up in the sky on this cliff, expected to get himself across these utility poles that stretch across the horizon like loose tightropes, despite having a heavy burden on his shoulders.
After getting feedback from my professor & my peers, I inked the piece & reworked it digitally.
I tweaked the composition a bit so that the boy was at a slight angle facing downwards & also a bit higher off the bottom of the piece. I also got rid of the extra utility poles, moved the clouds to the bottom rather than the top, & designed "Yeasayer" differently to fit the tone of the poster.
