Lawrence Community Shelter

What is the Lawrence Community Shelter?
The mission of the Lawrence Community Shelter is to provide safe shelter and comprehensive services and programs that provide a path to a positive future for people experiencing homelessness and are at risk for homelessness.

What was the Project?
To create an awareness campaign for the shelter to help raise consciousness in the community about homelessness and hopefully increase donation support and volunteers.

Process
I began this project by interviewing Loring Henderson, the director of the Lawrence Community Shelter. She explain the causes for homelessness and her organization helps those who are caught up in homelessness.
I started researching what other organizations have done to raise awareness while creating a consistent image for their organization. The biggest challenge that I faced during this project was to give a message that did not offend, but that did raise awareness about the conditions that people who are homeless have to endure.

I created: a logo and standards, stationery, business cards, two ad campaigns, a magazine ad, newspaper ad, annual report design, as well as a website. I finished the project with a research paper about Lawrence’s rising homeless population and what the community can do to release the burden placed on society.

I created this series in effort to challenge the way the viewer looks at the world around them in comparison to a person who is homeless. I juxtaposed ordinary objects in public space and attached a word that represented a use the average person would not use object for. I felt this was a direct approach towards confronting the viewer in a passive way.

I received an Annual Report from Loring Henderson and create a format that was able to be mailed to perspective donors and organizations. I found a book with several different folding techniques, and used the layout which had a heart that clasped together on the front.

I placed all of the directors, their goal, and contact information on the cover. Inside, is an accordion fold layout that delivers the statistics gathered over the year. Space in between the information are a series of photographs I took for different parts of the integrated branding project.
