Hurdle Project P01

Hurdle Project

This was the first project of my 3rd year in Architecture school.
- T01 Universidade Lusíada de Lisboa

The Hurdle project located in Alfama, Lisbon, was a temporary and exterior exposition for the Sovereign Military Order of Malta and also a hurdle for the active works on the roof of the church of Santa Luzia in the area.
In this project I used sketches as a strategic process of exploration and introduced myself to the notion of materiality, and used it for the definition of the architectonic objects proposed in this urban cenary.
I used an abstract form to connect all the elements of this space based on an existent wood work (the pergola system)  that already existed in this space and used derived from wood materials in order to get the look of wood but at the same time a better strength and resistence.

IDEA

The final idea of this project is based on the intercection between the hurdle’s architecture and the city’s architecture.
This intersection happens around a conceptual fading of the exhibition route. It starts in the hurdle and through a group of obstacles of similar but yet diferent shapes and it difuses itself allowing this passage of the two architectural systems.
The exploration of this space by an observer is also a very important factor for this conceptual idea and it could be interpreted in two ways. The first is where an observer is visiting the city and discovers pieces of the exposition elements that can be interacted with. The second one is where the observer starts from the hurdles architecture and walks towards its end in order to fade in to the city.
Ambience

The ambience generated by the hurdle next to the church of Santa Luzia and the exhibition pretends to conciliate this area and to antagonize the presence of the works in the church’s roof.
The use of the local flora combined with a some new one helps to form this ambience formed by the hurdle, made in wood like elements to create a conection to nature.
