Cave Fungi and Fauna

A groundwater stream runs throughout the cave supporting a variety of wildlife. A Cave Salamander can be seen in the bottom right of this image.
This short water fall is the final stage of a cascade within the cave.
A juvenile Western Slimy Salamander perched on a stone.
Carrying camera equipment through the wet narrow passages of the cave.
Mushroom mycelium hanging from the cave ceiling and glistening with condensation.
A fruiting mycelial mass wrapped around an exposed root in a mycorrhizal relationship. Behind the mushroom another exposed root can be seen, this one bearing what appears to be root nodules formed by nitrogen fixing bacteria.
A Cave Salamander hiding in a small muddy crevice in the cave wall.
Special thanks to Samin who helped haul equipment into the cave and photographed the creative process.
