Vučko is a vintage Yugoslav superstar, official mascot of the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo. ¶ When I was a little kid I liked the mascot so much that I drew it countless times. At that time all I wanted was to become an illustrator just to be able to draw characters like Vučko. ¶ Vučko & raja (Vučko and Friends) is an ongoing, self-initiated series of screen printed posters, made-up chronicles of Vučko’s whereabouts with friends and a grown-up tribute to my favorite childhood characters. ¶ // I L L U S T R A T I O N S // ¶ Betnem se vraća kući (Batman is Coming Home) - Vučko (the mascot of the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo) and Zagi (the mascot of 1987 Summer Universiade in Zagreb) are angry and dissapointed that Batmen arrived a few decades late to rescue them from the Yugoslav wars started in 1991. He apologizes for being busy flirting with Smurfette. ¶ Ašikovanje (Flirting) - A cliché scene of a date with a male anxiously awaiting the end of dating formalities preceding sex. ¶ Indoktrinacija od malih nogu (Indoctrinating Youth) - Tito was a communist leader of the former Yugoslavia who created a strong personality cult through mass media propaganda and education system. Most children, including me, were strongly affected by propaganda and used to adore him as much as religious children adored their saints. Therefore, Illustration shows Vučko as a child held in arms by Tito in a manner borrowed from religious propaganda iconography. ¶ Žmire (Hide and Seek) - Vučko and Zagi are playing hide-and-seek, one of the favorite children’s games of my generation. The illustration is more about Vučko’s character, particularly the insecurity about his appearance. He’s annoyed and insulted that Zagi is hiding beneath his nose, drawing attention to it’s gigantic size. ¶ Ljubav u rukavicama (I Wanna Make Glove to You) - Just a word play drawn with an allusion that makes some people laugh and the others uncomfortable :) ¶ Memento mori (Latin: Remember you must die) - Memento mori is a popular medieval art theme, a symbolic reminder of mortality, interpreted here in a cheerful manner, contrary to the more common gloomy approach. Vučko and Zagi enjoy the summer night on Alifakovac, old graveyard with a beautiful view of Sarajevo. They notice a shooting star on the sky (shaped like 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympics logo). Vučko makes a wish to live forever. But, the graveyard tombstone, shaped like a disapproving hand gesture, reminds him that a belief in the eternal life is just a wishful thinking superstition. // N O T E S _ C R E D I T S _ A N D _ G R A T I T U D E // ¶ Thank you Pero Mrnarević for leading the printing process :) ¶ One of the illustrations, "Betnem is coming home", was pre-released for the occasion of launching the Vizkultura's project Plakatiranje. It's also a winner of the 2014 Judgment Day Festival - Illustrator of the Year Award, and an accolade winner of Dan D Festival, both held in Zagreb, Croatia. ¶ Jože Trobec, was a designer of the original 1984 mascot that inspired the project. ¶ Thanks to Vanja Blumenšajn for coming up with "I Wanna Make Glove to You" sentence which I interpreted in one of the illustrations. ¶ Vučko’s headbang animation is inspired by Rocking-stickman.gif by an unknown author. ¶ Vučko’s walk animation was inspired by Fraser Davidson's Skillshare course Simple Character Animation ¶ The Animator's Survival Kit - a book by Richard Williams, thought me a lot about frame by frame animation and helped me make the animated gifs. Vučko is a vintage Yugoslav superstar, official mascot of the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo.

When I was a kid I adored the mascot and drew it countless times. At that time all I wanted was to become an illustrator so I could draw characters like Vučko.

Vučko & raja is a limited series of hand-printed serigraphs with made-up chronicles of Vučko’s whereabouts with friends. And a tribute to my favorite childhood character that made me start to draw.
