Callaghan barges into a case involving a £40,000 insurance claim following a suspicious-looking suicide, despite the fact that he doesn't represent any client.

Callaghan is hired by a Mrs. Paula Denys who claims that she paid a thief to steal a priceless coronet from her husband's safe. Now he refuses to hand over the stolen object and is instead trying to blackmail her.

Callaghan encounter a case in a small country village near Alfriston where a wealthy woman may have been killed by any one of her three attractive daughters, furious about the terms of the new will she was drafting.

No investigation is too audacious for Callaghan, who finds time, between the obligations of booze and broads, to solve twelve piquant mysteries. He is aided of course, once again, by the redoubtable Windemere Nikolls and loyal secretary Effie Thompson.
