the Seagull Postcards

The challenge of this project was to create three postcards for a play expressing the emotion through abstract lighting of paper. The Seagull is a drama written by Anton Chekhov set in early 20th Century Aristocratic Russia. The emotions I pulled from were classiness, heartbreak, tragedy, envy, and sorrow. After playing with different kinds of paper and different ways of lighting it, dropping ink onto crumbled tracing paper brought the emotion of the play to life. To give each postcard it’s own voice yet still feel as a part of the whole, I gave them a narrative that weaves from one postcard to the other. The first one acting as an establishing shot by creating the mood of the aristocratic class. The second one introduces themes of love, heartbreak and envy. Culminating in tragedy and death in the final postcard.
