2. THE NEW YORKER FRONT COVER:
SCHOOL SHOOTING THEME
I had to pretend to make a real cover design for The New Yorker Magazine that represents a relevant and serious recent event. I made this illustration about a recent school shooting that happened in 2022 in Texas, which follows a long list of similar incidents in the USA.
This illustration depicts the recent news related to a mass school shooting at Robb School in Uvalde, Texas. The tragedy was perpetrated by 18-year-old Salvador Rolando Ramos, who gained access to his former school and initiated the massacre, resulting in 21 fatalities and 17 wounded. This incident stands as one of the most severe school shootings in United States history, adding to an already extensive list that has been growing over the past decade. It is an alarmingly recurring issue in this country, sparking significant controversy regarding the ease with which American citizens can obtain firearms, particularly young individuals who are clearly troubled. The discussion also delves into the inadequacy of local authorities and the government in controlling and eradicating these situations.

On the cover illustration, a school corridor is depicted, where a spotlight illuminates three backpacks on a pool of blood, stained by it. This symbolizes the deaths of the students, engulfed in the tragedy, and cast as the central figures in the event, under the small spotlight in such a dark situation. Protruding from one of the backpacks is a rifle (the weapon used by the assailant), illustrating that it is the students themselves who can access these weapons and even move around the school with them, potentially becoming the perpetrators of such attacks. Additionally, the American flag covers the blood-soaked floor, signifying that this country and its government, while often extolling freedom, are ultimately implicated with blood on their hands. Most elements are presented in black and white, directing focus towards the red blood, as I believe it is a powerful way to convey the impact of such a gruesome event, where there is no need to obscure the violence surrounding it, but rather to create full awareness and consciousness about it. Furthermore, the red of the blood merges with the red stripes of the flag, once again linking the tragedy to this patriotic and libertarian symbol, which masks the true state of the nation.
