Little Lucy Ladybird Update

Little Lucy Ladybird is one of my favourite stories that I’ve written. I wrote it after playing a game with my daughter when she was seven years old and not only is it a fun children’s story, but there’s also a nice message about not judging people by their appearance.
I’d had several attempts at illustrating the story in the past, but as my skills have improved I decided to give it another go. I wanted to bring the characters to life and make them more human than previously as well as more animated.
I wanted to convey the fun in the story in a unique and whimsical style.
I think that is what I’ve achieved.
First Rendering
This is an early version of Lucy in this project. I was generally happy with her appearance apart from her hands. The fingers look claw-like and spidery.
Lucy Scared
This is one of my favourite pictures as it really brings the character to life. I had a lot of fun getting the expression right and positioning the arms to give the effect that Lucy is running for her life.
The Ladybird Grove
This is the largest picture in the project and has the most detail. The image is in colour but I have produced monochrome versions as many digital publishing media wont accept coloured images for publication.
Little Lucy Ladybird
This is the final, coloured version of Lucy Ladybird.
You can find the story Little Lucy Ladybird on my blog
