Today's Ocean Soundscape

Today's Ocean Soundscape
An illustration of the ocean soundscape, including sources of underwater noise.

Natural sources of sound in the ocean include waves, wind, rain, marine mammals, fishes, invertebrates, currents, underwater landslides, earthquakes and volcano eruptions. Anthropogenic sources of underwater noise include acoustic deterrent devices (ADDs), fishing vessels, recreational  vessels, cruise ships, commercial shipping vessels, offshore oil and gas exploration and extraction, seismic airgun surveys, military operations and sonar, offshore renewable energy, and construction and pile driving.

The Ocean Soundscape illustration was created as part of the Joint Framework for Ocean Noise in the Atlantic Seas (JONAS) project and in collaboration with the European Marine Board (EMB). The illustrations were commissioned for the EMB’s Future Science Brief 7: Addressing Underwater Noise in Europe: Current State of Knowledge and Future Priorities
