Discovr is a mobile app that helps small music artists get paid what they deserve, find more local fans, and grow their following. Discovr also provides a platform for listeners to find more local live shows with ease, encouraging more people to go out and support their favorite local artists.
Senior project is a semester long project of the students choosing that must bring awareness to an issue and solve it. As a musician and music lover, picking a focus came easy. This semester long project resulted an extensive brand guide, five print posters, a fully developed app, and lots of tears.
The Problem
Our lives are full of music, it’s all around us! Yet, so much music remains undiscovered. A majority of music artists struggle to make a living, and there are a few reasons for this.
To start, the top percentage of artists dominate the music industry, taking attention away from smaller artists. Without a large following, gaining exposure through word of mouth or social media is very challenging. Since the rise of digital technology, artists can no longer rely on album sales as a main source of income. CDs, records, and iTunes purchases have been replaced with streaming services in the modern day. Streaming services make music accessible for everyone, but fail to appropriately compensate musicians for their work. This leaves concert sales. Surprisingly, the average band doesn’t make very much from selling tickets. So small bands get most of their revenue from merch sales these days, and to sell enough merch requires a large following.
All of these factors create a vicious cycle, which leads to a majority of music artists giving up their dream career in pursuit of a job that will pay the bills.
The Solution
Isn’t this such a shame? These artist’s creations make our world so much better. But, how can a problem on this scale be solved?
This is where Discovr comes in. Discovr is a mobile app that helps small music artists get paid what they deserve, find more local fans, and grow their following. Discovr also provides a platform for listeners to find more local live shows with ease, encouraging more people to go out and support their favorite local artists.
Unlike other concert finding apps, Discovr is easy to navigate, provides in-depth information on shows and artists, and gives musicians a place to promote work and connect with fans. Most importantly, Discovr focuses solely on developing small local artists.
