Data Visualization Online Course: Data Visualization for Narrative Designs
I’m very happy to share my new data visualization course with Domestika! I worked on it with great care for many months and I really hope you’ll enjoy it! Creating a second course pushed me into further research for contents, resources and lessons learned during the years. I worked to create something new for the people who already followed the first one, but also a standalone course you can take independently from it.
The course is divided into 4 units.
After a quick introduction about me and my influences, I will talk about the visual translation of information and the role of perception.
I will then present a set of questions we can ask ourselves before starting a new project, the needs and the reasons that can lead to specific design choices.
Next, I will talk about the relationship between visual and written words and their importance while designing visual data narratives.
I will discuss how to tell stories using data and visual elements, while also considering the way in which such stories will be explored by the readers. I will share with you the process and the reasons behind some projects of mine I'm very fond of.
Finally, I will talk about how we can use—and sometimes challenge!—visual metaphors in our data visualization projects, to create new environments the readers can immerse themselves into.
We will then start developing our narratives: selecting the topic and the story you want to tell, creating the dataset with Google Sheets, and sketching the macrostructure of the story.
Next, we'll work with RAWGraphs and Illustrator to design the different parts of our piece, focusing on the details, texts, legends, and finishing touches.
The course is in English with subtitles in Spanish, Portuguese, German, French, Italian, Polish, Dutch.
