Lilith’s origins most likely come from ancient Sumerian beliefs of night spirits that preyed upon humans while they were sleeping. Of the four classes, Lilith probably most resembles the Ardat Lili, whom seduce men at night and steal their sperm to procreate demonic children. Some scholars relate Lilith with the Lilitu, winged night spirits that preyed specifically on women, women in childbirth, and their newborns.
Lilith’s name is also revealing of her characteristics. "Lil" means both "air", "breath", and "spirit" in Sumerian, most likely connoting that the substance of air was synonymous with the substance of spirits. This relates the the original spelling of Liloth (LILOTh), translated to "the spirits" in Hebrew.

Lilit o Lilith (del hebreo: לילית) es una figura legendaria del folclore judío, de origen mesopotámico. Se la considera la primera esposa de Adán, anterior a Eva. Según la leyenda (que no aparece en la Biblia), abandonó el Edén por propia iniciativa y se instaló junto al mar Rojo, uniéndose allí con Samael, que se convirtió en su amante, y con otros demonios. Más tarde, se convirtió en un demonio que rapta a los niños en sus cunas por la noche y se une a los hombres como un súcubo, engendrando hijos (los lilim) con el semen que los varones derraman involuntariamente cuando están durmiendo (polución nocturna). Se la representa con el aspecto de una mujer muy hermosa, con el pelo largo y rizado, generalmente rubia o pelirroja, y a veces alada.
