“Fisherman’s Curse” addresses ghosts nets, abandoned fishing gear that threatens sea life in the open ocean. Two sea lions appear as though swimming and playing, but are in fact tangled by an abandoned net. Images from ghost net damage are often graphic and disturbing, depicting scarred animals and animals who die from choking on debris. I chose to diminish the graphic nature of tangled animals in this illustration, favoring a graceful depiction of sea lions, while alluding to the morbid outcome of abandoned fishing gear.
