The elements: Earth, water, wind en fire - and more …

Earth, Water, Wind and Fire - The four elements as European cultures understand them.
In Eastern cultures they have more elements, like in Japan where ‘void’ is a fifth element.
Some elements are visible, like earth, water and fire, others are not, like wind and void.
The invisible elements can only be seen indirectly.
In this long term project I try to visualise the elements, visible and invisible, western and eastern.
FIRE - Jaar, Bhutan. During a festival, walking to fire is a test of faithfulness
WATER - Iceland. One of many cascades where the immense force of water can be felt.
WATER and LIGHT - Iceland, Gullfoss. A cascade where the light is changed into a rainbow.
EARTH and WATER - Iceland, Hveravellir. A hotspot where hot water comes from the depth of the earth.
EARTH - Iceland, Hveravellir. Holes in the earth show places where our world was born.
EARTH - Iceland where the birth of the earth can be seen and smelled
WATER - Japan. A Tori standing in the water as a gate to another world.
Fire - Japan. Walking on fire as proof of faith.
EARTH - Iceland hard as stone but once it bent under the forces of eruption.
WATER - Holland. Fishing to get life out of the water.
WIND - Netherlands, Utrecht. A windmill turning by the force of the wind.
A hot water fountain on Iceland: 80 degrees hot water from 'the middle pof the earth'
Alkmaar, Netherlands: Amphicars on the water
