The construction of St. Mary's Basilica began in the 13th century on the foundations of an earlier Romanesque church. The new temple was consecrated around 1320. Over the next centuries, the church was rebuilt many times. There is a magnificent altar inside. Work on the altar of Wit Stwosz lasted from 1477 to 1489. During World War II, it was looted by German barbarians. He returned to Poland after 7 years in 1946, and to the basilica only in 1957.
