Sustainable Urban Design and Intervention
Utilising a neighbourhood strategy towards Climate Adaptability, the project acknowledges societal challenges and spatial inequalities in Zutphen, Netherlands. This is done through the incorporation of water and functional green spaces on urban and building design which captures rainwater for active reuse and recycling. To teach children about this topic, water collection and filtration is done in an open air classroom construction, which promotes learning and time outdoors
Open Air Classroom
The building construction illustrates the volume of water need to meet use demands through room size and the passive filtration system is directly accommodated in the building corridor, protecting it from winter and placing the water filtration on display. By incorporating open air classroom design, the timber construction is utilised to educate children and local community of the different means of water can be filtered and used in a sustainable manner.
Rainwater and Greywater Collection and Filtration
Passive filtration sub-straights utilised, fine-grain, coarse aggregate, coarse grain, charcoal, and UV sterilisation, for are based on water function. These are based on health requirements standards found in the USA, since public rainwater collection and use was not permitted in the Netherlands at the time of design. Greywater from human use is allowed for plant use through hydroponics, green facades, and constructed wetlands. Extensive research and application of water systems was applied in order to propose a solution for water management on a neighbourhood level.
