Medusa is a mythological creature from ancient Greek mythology. She is most commonly depicted as a woman with snakes for hair and the ability to turn people to stone with her gaze. According to legend, Medusa was once a beautiful woman who was punished by the goddess Athena for being violated in one of Athena's temples. As punishment, Athena transformed Medusa's hair into snakes and cursed her gaze, causing anyone who looked directly at her to turn to stone. Medusa is often depicted as a monster in myths and stories, but some versions of her story portray her as a tragic figure who was punished for circumstances beyond her control.
