Mandelbulbs in the Rhine river

MANDELBULBS SEEN IN THE RHINE RIVER!
We went outside shooting stills and videos around Düsseldorf, and lo and behold...
We spotted two small Mandelbulbs floating in the Rhine river.

Well... To be honest it was done in post.
And here's how we approached it...

This is the original plate we shot:

Using Autodesk Flame, the footage was tracked, so we had position data for the balls.
The tricky part was making the rotations look real. Since the Mandelbulb is not a sphere it will rotate differently in the water compared to the perfect round ref balls we had.
So the footage was analysed and with some extra magic we created rotation data for x, y and z. Then the position and rotation data was exported as FBX and imported into Cinema4D. The Mandelbulbs was then connected to the axises exported from Flame, and rendered with Octane.
The render was then composited and the reflections was matched with the original footage.
We will try to do an in-depth video about this at some point...
Stay tuned!
Thanks for watching :)
