After receiving the brief and visiting the Victorian House Museum, having witnessed this large collection of objects from one era, I decided to focus on the idea of collection.
After researching natural history illustration styles, I felt that the best style that would suit my personal drawing style would be a combination of mark making, line and etching style similarly used by western explorers when documenting artefacts and objects of foreign cultures.
I myself am an avid collector of masks. I have a large collection of masks from different cultures and places all over the world. I felt that this would be perfect for the project, especially in terms of the chosen illustration style. I too would be documenting cultural artefacts.
When faced with choosing masks to draw, I felt that my personal collection would suffice however after documenting all the masks in my personal collection I started to look for masks that I wanted for my collection. Then I started looking at masks and headpieces that are very important culturally now. So ultimately I feel there is a balance of old and new artefacts that make up my design.
I felt that using my own handwriting as the integrated text was essential in completing the overall feel of “documentation of artefacts”.
Having come away from this project I feel that my drawing skills benefited greatly as the chosen illustration style I used added and improved my own.
