Boulder Opal is a type of unique rock found in Queensland, Australia. It is easily identifiable because it is a mixture of ironstone and opal either in a matrix or layered; the stones often have a more ‘Earthy’, ‘rocky’ look and feel about them.
There are many types of boulder opals including pipe crystal (a more transparent crystallised opal), wood fossil (fossilised wood) and many variances in colours and patterns usually determined by the mine site they are mined from (Yowah, Koroit, Mintabie, Opalton, Winton to name a few).
