Masters Challenge - Grande Odalisque, 1814

'La Grande Odalisque' (1814) demonstrates changes from established traditions in the representation of the female nude. This work signified a break from Neoclassicism and shifted towards exotic Romanticism. She is beautiful, has a confident look and an attitude that women learn to adopt right in that historic period full of changes. I chose a female deer to represent the woman from the original work because doe's represent femininity, grace, leadership, and regeneration. I feel as if even throughout historic periods the hierarchy of animals in the wild according to their gender has always existed. Why did it take so long for women to gain that same type of respect and recognition? Women were made to be seen as objects and weak for centuries. I hope to have been able to demonstrate that we as humans have many similarities to animals.
