About the project
The MATRIOSHKA sleeping bag is a new interpretation of Russian traditional decorative elements.
Inspired by matryoshka doll and Khokhloma decorative paintings, the traditional floral motives are combined with new elements like different kinds of berries, more simple flowers, smiling sun and birds.
Black, red and gold were the principal colours of traditional Khokhloma painting. Additional colours were yellow, orange, green and brown. There were several shades of green. This range of colours was established over many decades and we maintained the same colours using blue instead of black for the background.
The traditional designs were based on popular motifs as the people observed nature. They saw the way a snowdrop flower blossoms, how a rowanberry ripens, how a blackcurrant leaf opens up and how its berries appear. Powers of observation, an awareness of the world and one's surroundings - all this contributed to the painting technique.
They learned from nature. We learn from nature.
