USER FOCUSED DESIGN PROJECT (PICTOGRAMS)

The brief:
Using Adobe Illustrator, design a set of pictograms for the Reading Museum that can be used in both general communication (e.g. brochures and website) and as part of the wayfinding system in the museum (i.e. they could be included on signage within the museum and on the printed floor plan).

The process:
I initially Observed the pictograms currently in use at Reading museum and on visiting decided that they were lacking greatly in a sense of continuity. I therefore chose to, when sketching, design my icons with a specific style in mind. I have aimed for a simplistic approach that is child friendly with fat, perhaps slightly streched shapes. I also tried to incorporate some disjointed sections within each to break the icons up and give a slightly more playful approach that works with the deffinitive shapes children are accustomed to, eg. square/circle. My set includes pictograms to direct visitors around the museum, including those for specific galleries and others to instruct different actions. The following are a selection I chose to develop on illustrator from my initial sketches.
