Coffea: Coffee Shop & Bakery (2014)

Custom logo designed for the store.  Coffea is the name of the plant that produces the coffee bean.
This coffee shop/bakery is located in Hermosa Beach, CA.  My concept was the coffee bean:  the various roasts translated into various shades of bamboo, the green unroasted bean is represented with bits of lime green throughout the space, the separation of seating areas is from the idea of the protection of the bean within the cherry, and the curvilinearity of much of the furniture is derived from the curves of a coffee bean.
Hermosa Beach is a very "green" oriented town so I chose as many sustainable materials as possible.
This project required us to perform solar and wind studies on the space using a program called Vasari.  This program allowed me to depict the movement of air throughout the space.  I decided to frost all of the skylights to provide a diffused light throughout the space instead of harsh sunlight.
There were 30 wooden trusses in the space that were not allowed to be moved so I encased them to minimize visual distraction in the ceiling.
Perspective of the space.  This image shows the green glow on the wall that occurs when the sun shines through the green skylights around the perimeter of the building.
The axon shows all of the frosted skylights surrounded by a border of green skylights.  The frosted lights allow for sun to penetrate the entire space but in a diffused manner.  The green skylights create a glow and a bit of color on the interior walls.

Part of this project was to study wind patterns and how a breeze would move throughout the space.  Yellow indicates fast moving air while blue represents no or minimal movement. By opening the front and back windows and only opening the back half of skylights, a breeze comes into the front of the space but stops where the gallery and order counter are.  This provides a still space in the back for customers who don't want to feel a breeze.  The open skylights at the back provide some cross ventilation and air moves out of the space through the top, as seen in the lowest image.
Almost all of the materials in this project are sustainable.
