Skin cancer public awareness campaign

I created a fictional PSA campaign about UV rays from sun causing damage to our DNA. I aimed for as simple of a composition as possible to communicate the realistic precautions that should be taken to avoid skin cancer. I really enjoyed starting with the spherical sun and "carving" into the shape in order to create a new representation. I thought the red would grab the attention of pedestrians. The color red is also commonly associated with danger. In this context, the red represents the sun and the hazards it can cause.

Icarus is a widely known Greek myth and it is a metaphor for knowing your limits and the dangers of having a hubris. When I was searching for a topic, I saw several posts that downplay how skin cancer can be contracted from the sun. While researching, I learned about 20 people in the US die from skin cancer every day. I figured then that there is a unawareness in the public. I wanted to choose a topic that informed people or an area where I felt people weren’t behaving properly and I feel skin cancer matches both of these domains.
