Controlled light for smooth transitions between highlights & shadows

Here's some examples of challenging lighting assignments I photographed in the studio. The key is to have a balance of soft, even light, illuminating both shadow and highlight areas. Glass and reflective metal surfaces are two subjects which require the highest amount of photography expertise in order to light properly. With smaller reflective products, such as jewelry or watches, the preferred method is to use a small dome tent or light box system. By placing the subject within these specially design boxes, light can be transmitted through or reflected off its surface to illuminate evenly for a pleasing effect. For larger products such as the water cutting tools featured below, its necessary to, "think out side the box" and use soft reflector lights mounted on light stands at a 45 degree angles to the subject. Multiple lights can be used in combination to create more dramatic modulated light.
