Photo Series - Kaleidoscopes
For my photo series I decided on abstract photography, despite not discussing it within class. I've always been drawn to abstract imagery as I find it very intriguing. It's fun to put a new spin on something you may have seen hundreds of times, now being unable to tell exactly what the photo is of.  I had practiced it a bit in the past but I wanted to go more in depth with it with a more interesting subject.

For my subject I photographed various videos of kaleidoscopes. I used very slow shutter speeds between 4 and 10 seconds to blur the motion together. As such the lowest ISO, 100, on my camera was used to compensate. As for the aperture range it varied depending on shutter speed, but all photos used higher apertures. I also moved my camera around in various ways to create additional effects within the images. This ranged from zooming in and out while the shutter was active, to flipping the camera, waving the camera around, and sometimes a combination of them all. The resulting images were very psychedelic and almost otherworldly.

I quite like the way the images turned out. I find them to be very visually interesting and each is different from the other. My two personal favourites are the first image and last image found on this project. I really like the multitude of rings found in the first image and how they draw the viewer into the center of the photo. As for the last image, it almost looks like some sort of rift opening in space. The analogous colour scheme of the image makes it very enjoyable to look at as well.

Overall, for experimenting with abstract photography I found this series to be quite successful. I had a lot of fun taking the images as well as narrowing down the best few out of the bunch. I had shot over 50 different photos within this series as I was heavily enjoying the experience. In the future I plan to experiment a lot more with abstract photography and see what kind of unique images I can come up with.
