For more than 50 years after the Great Fire of 1842, the people of Hamburg had to get by without a town hall. On 26th October 1897, the new building on the Kleine Alster was inaugurated. It is magnificent and full of refinements. 112 metres high and almost as wide as the old building, decorated with saints, kings and virtues – and that is just the façade.

Over a period of two years, I documented the interiors of the huge building complex that houses the Senate, the Parliament, the Finance Department, the State Archives and other authorities under one roof. In 2022, Hamburg City Hall will celebrate its 125th anniversary.
