More4 Ident and Rebrand

Channel 4 in-house creative agency, 4Creative and ManvsMachine commissioned Jason Bruges Studio as Production Designers for the new More4 live-action idents for the channel, and most recently the Christmas idents shot in Iceland. Middlesex University and redLoop design consultancy have a great working relationship and, along with a team, I was offered the opportunity to work at Jason Bruges Studio.

I worked with a small team to design, build and install the individual flipper units that were filmed across 4 different locations including 2 outdoor and 2 indoor sites. My jobs included, designing and preparing the metal structure, produce wiring with all components, organising the coloured triangle flippers to fit with the brand identity and assembly of all parts. I also visited one of the sites in London to devise a way of mounting the units for the TV shoot.

The re-brand is centred round a bold, flexible logo that morphs through a series of flips, folds and reveals. The colour palette reflects the vibrant nature of interiors, food culture, fashion and other contemporary lifestyle programming. Live-action idents see the brand break out into the real world in the form of mechanical ‘flippers’. The installations inhabit environments from a domestic staircase to an abandoned fishing boat in Dungeness.

Channel 4 were so impressed, they requested an interactive installation for in their London Headquarters. For this, we mounted 100 revamped units onto a vertical plinth and attached a push-release timed button that set off the flippers to reveal the logo when it was pushed. I also helped create three christmas tree structures that held the flipper units for a Christmas themed TV shoot in Iceland.
