Logo and branding for the 6th International Symposium on Space Sailing.
Since its inauguration in Herrsching, Germany in 2007, the ISSS takes place every three years and has already been held in New York, Glasgow, Kyoto and last in Aachen in 2019. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the symposium has been moved from 2022 to 2023.
The 6th International Symposium on Space Sailing (ISSS) will take place from 5 to 9 June 2023 in New York City, USA. It will be hosted by the New York City College of Technology, City University of New York.
The symposium serves as an international exchange on the latest advances in sail-based propulsion technologies, as an alternative to conventional propulsion systems that need to carry fuel (like rockets).
Similar to the wind moving a sailboat through water, solar sails use sunlight to move spaceships through space. The sail captures constantly streaming solar particles (photons) with huge sails made of lightweight material. The increasing accumulation of these particles then provides enough thrust to propel a spacecraft.
In addition to the sun as a source of thrust, there are also other ways of using sailing power to move through space. For this reason, the symposium was renamed from Solar Sailing to Space Sailing in order to include other propulsion possibilities.
