Pursuing the promise of an amazing view at the Lookout trail in Ontario's Algonquin Park, I ventured across the highway to a less travelled path. On my trek I was captivated by a Hemlock which was growing straight and tall in its race for the sun. Like fingers grasping a baseball, its roots flowed in all directions around a massive boulder anchoring the tree and assuring sustenance. As I puzzled over the effects of decades of erosion, I marvelled at this powerful life force and the often obvious but sometimes inconspicuous challenges faced by all living things.
