Ishirō Honda: "Monsters are born too tall, too strong, too heavy—that is their tragedy"

To celebrate the new Godzilla movie I wanted to create a few promotional images to celebrate the wonderful world of Japanese Kaiju. Godzilla has always been my favorite movie creature feature and remains so to this day. I look forward to the upcoming movie with great expectation and hope its both reverential to the original but also advances the character and story respectfully. However anticipated the new movie, I don't think any amount of sophisticated cgi will ever come close to being as memorable as when portrayed by actor Haruo Nakajima in a rubber suit in the original Godzilla (Godzilla, King of the Monsters!) movie, directed by Director Ishirō Honda.

As a starting point with these images I wanted to go back to how the original Kaiju were portrayed, adding some of my own invention without diluting the appearance of these spectacular monsters and also not straying too far from my working style.

I also wanted to reference and pay an affectionate homage to the wonderful plastic model assembly kits manufactured by Aurora. In my formative years I spent many an hour glueing and painting these kits together and the 'Glow in the Dark' Godzilla was my favourite by far. I also really enjoyed the Aurora box cover art created by James Bama with their heightened colour from the printing process and splashy hand painted typeface - wonderful!
