Recreating Mark Rothko’s ‘Blue and grey’ 1962 using P5.js
Mark Rothko’s seemingly simple paintings are meant to be seen in sizes much larger than our screens sizes as big as a whole wall of a room or hall to experience the immersiveness of the painting. These paintings one said to make people experience deeper emotions, some people have cried & laughed while experiencing the paintings at Rothko Chapel. His paintings are meant to be experienced & felt rather than just be seen. His philosophy behind using just the colors are that when one creates a realistic impression of an object it reminds the viewer of the time when they saw the object in real life, such paintings are just a recreation of objects & not an experience in itself.

To recreate the generative art using p5.js, “Blue and grey” 1962 was chosen. To generate the layers of colors similar to the original canvas particle system like that of spray paint was used. In the code random function was used & parameters like size, transparency & color values of circles have been varied. As the code loop runs continuously the canvas is filled up. The filling up of canvas is unique each time the code is run. Watching the canvas filling up can be immersive for the user. And the best part the code is just 48 lines.
For the second part of the generative art, the art was made interactive. While looking at the painting one might wonder what will it be if the distinct blue & white could be intermixed. By using a mouseclick the colors could be intermixed. As the user stops interacting with the piece, the art returns to its original state slowly over time.
