ILM 2009 VFX Reel - title graphics
The titles for the Industrial Light & Magic 2009 Siggraph electronic theater reel combined motion graphics with plates shot on a stage using a model miniature satalite (kinda large actually, about 8 feet diameter with the arms extended). I designed and built the miniature and storyboarded the shots to plan our shoot. I then worked with another artist to capture it on the stage using a canon dslr - mounted to a crane/dolly combination. These were then cleaned up and combined with added screens showing footage from the ILM shows (Terminator, Transformers, Star Trek) by myself and another compositor. I left the white ambiguous background to keep a sort of bathed in light effect.

Here are the finished transitions on their own (without the visual effects breakdowns for the ILM films). Sound design was by Skywalker Sound...
Here are a few stills from the finished intro sequences...
These are my storyboards for the types of shots and camera moves I wanted to capture...
Here are some more stills...
The following are samples of my concept sketches to get the idea of the satelite, and approved by the client (ILM PR)...
One of my pages working out some of the model-building plans, incorporating a motor with a tripod/gear type of assembly - which opened up the arms of the satelite. The movement worked but proved too much for the motor to work smoothly, so I kept the arms of the satelite open in the stage shoot...
Here are some other concepts for an alternate unused type of machine/ship with view screens all over it...
