Vancouver Magazine - The Portobello West Market

Portobello West Fashion and Arts Market

The Portobello West fashion and arts market turns four this year and celebrates by giving back to the artists that inspired its creation. Its recent venture into the non-profit sector provides a platform for burgeoning designers, as well as some whimsy in our wardrobes.

Discover artists like Leah Schell, whose hauntingly playful illustrations are available on calendars and her Cycles of Life oracle cards. Ask for a free reading—they’re startlingly accurate. Fiona Louie’s jewelry may also be tucked in one of the market’s corners; charming copper starfishes, bikes, and acorns strung on a chain. Professor Whovianart also makes the occasional appearance, toting his alter-steampunk creations (think Wild Wild West and steam trains). He serves up exposed clockwork watches for the fiendishly creative and vintage yoyos for children at heart.

The market is held every last Sunday of the month at the Rocky Mountaineer Station. Check portobellowest.com for the list of vendors at the next market, or wing it to discover your own favorites.
