Chemex – Monument to handmade coffee maker

Chemex – Monument to handmade coffee maker
The era of the third wave of coffee along with the prosperity of the specialty coffee industry . It was also the period when manual dispensing tools were on the throne with many more comebacks and benefits than before of some mixing sets. The most special is Chemex, which is considered a symbol of the craft coffee making village.

History of the Chemex

The Chemex flask was invented in 1941 by an eccentric scientist – Doctor of Chemistry Peter Schlumbohm. He owns more than 300 patents, is the "father" of many tools, from cocktail machines to cars. His design philosophy is to make everyday objects more useful. More attractive and fun to use has always been the creative motto of this doctor. And the Chemex vase is his most famous invention.

PERFECT - SIMPLE - BEAUTIFUL are the criteria that inspired Schlumbohm's creativity when designing Chemex. Perfect in taste, simple to use and prepare, but also beautiful to store, decorate and display. It sounds hard to put all three into one product, but he succeeded and more.

With the advantage of being a chemist, he thoroughly understands and understands the chemistry behind the process of extracting flavor and caffeine from coffee beans. It was this that helped him touch the desire for PERFECT. Besides, his erudite knowledge helped him invent the chemex filter paper with double bond. Contributes to the perfect extraction every time.

Design Chemex to become a monument

First, Dr. Schlumbohm was inspired by the Bauhaus school of design. His creative inspiration came from laboratory equipment: glass funnels and Erlenmeyer flasks. Next, he added an air channel to the funnel to leave a space for air to escape during the movement of the dripping liquid into the vessel.

He created the Chemex shape like an hourglass and has become part of the iconic American history.

You see, Chemex is made simply from borosilicate glass. The main highlight is the neck decorated with wood and the beautiful cowhide "tie". It can be said that Chemex is sophisticated from form to function. Chemex has been awarded by all three Science – Design – Art communities. There are not many products with that honor in human history.

“Design is hard to beat”

There are also many dispensing kits based on filtration and drip principles. But the truth is it is very difficult to compete with Chemex in terms of appearance to the quality of the drinks made. It is this that has become an irreplaceable monument. This classic design has become popular in homes and cafes around the world.

From the original design, there were also several other versions along the way but not too many transformations. In 2013, Chemex launched a classic design, featuring a glass catch handle embedded in the original design as an alternative to a wooden necklace.

Besides, there are also a number of other versions with a necklace made of smooth pressed wood or silicon. Chemex looks like a piece of equipment in a science lab. This also gives the drinker a rather enjoyable emotional experience besides the taste.
