The North Face® was created in 1966, in San Francisco, California, when Douglas Tompkins and Dick "Hap" Klopp created a team store that eventually acquired its current name. The name was chosen because, in mountaineering in the northern hemisphere, the north face of a mountain is the coldest and has the harshest weather conditions, especially in winter, making it the most difficult to climb. In 1980, ski clothing was added to the product line, and eventually camping gear as well. The North Face is now a wholly owned subsidiary of the VF Corporation
