SITE ANALYSIS OF SENTUL, KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA
Sentul originally grew as the hub of Kuala Lumpur’s railway network during colonial times. Workers from the Indian sub-continent were employed at the railway works and they settled down in the vicinity of the Federated Malay States Railway (FMSR) depot, which was then one of the finest engineering workshops in the colonies. After independence, Sentul continued its role as the hub for Keretapi Tanah Melayu(KTM). The railway buildings, the Sentul Market as well as religious institutions serving the original workers gave a certain kind charm and identity to Sentul. However, the decline of the railway’s importance in the 1960’s saw Sentul slowly becoming a forgotten part district of Kuala Lumpur.
This all changed with the acquisition and development of parts of KTM land by developer YTL Land in the early 2000’s. Today Sentul is rapidly evolving into one of Kuala Lumpur’s upmarket neighborhood with the construction of several luxury housing and commercial developments. Sentul is an area of sharp contrasts, with some of the city’s poorest residents living in the shadows of towers housing some of the city’s richest. The juxtaposition of the existing community with those moving in as well as existing cultural markers with hip ‘lifestyle’ destinations such as the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Center (KLPAC) makes Sentul an interesting site to examine culture, community and the city.
