Duo: the wheelchair for two

This beautiful project was based on the wish to provide an affordable wheelchair that also served to make the user happier. Our focus was on the elderly, living in homes or at their own place, because over 80% of people in wheelchairs are in this situation. After many interviews and a try-out living in a wheelchair ourselves, we decided to focus our attention on the wheelchair-user's companion. This person, friend, family, nurse or stranger, is rarely taken into account in the design process of a wheelchair, though they are an essential actor in the life of the wheelchair user. Usually handles are too small, discussion is impractical, and if you want a break you have to stand next to the wheelchair, towering above the person sitting. This is why we decided to improve the grip for the companion, and add an extra pull-out chair in order for two people to be able to have a chat together at the same level. The result is DUO, a injected-plastic wheelchair, affordable and ergonomic, designed for companionship. This was a group project with Ramzi AMAR and Florent VIERON.
