‘Ik ben een soort ambassadeur. Waar ik ook ga, ik laat zien dat ik een kunstenaar uit Palestina ben.’
Dat bracht Khaled in de oude haven van Gent. ‘Ook hier wil ik een stukje van mezelf neerzetten. Ik wil de Arabische kalligrafie bekender maken en weet zeker dat de mensen het mooi zullen vinden.’ Het geeft volgens Khaled niet dat veel mensen hier de Arabische taal niet machtig zijn. ‘Ook al kunnen ze de kalligrafie niet lezen, ze kunnen het
Wherever I go, I show that I am an artist from Palestine.” That brought Khaled to the old port of Ghent. “I also want to put a part of myself here. I want to make Arabic calligraphy more known and I am sure that people will like it.” According to Khaled, it does not matter that many people here do not speak the Arabic language. "Even if they can't read the calligraphy, they can feel it."

Khaled is op uitnodiging van de Vereniging voor Ontwikkeling en Emancipatie van Moslims (VOEM) in Gent. Hij zal er een grote muurschildering maken achter de bushalte in de Aziëstraat. Maar zijn bekendste werk vind je niet in ons land, maar in de bezette Gazastrook. Besieged Childhood heet het, en het is een kunstwerk van maar liefst twintig meter hoog en vijftien meter breed’’
Khaled is invited by the Association for Development and Emancipation of Muslims (VOEM) in Ghent. He will make a large mural behind the bus stop in the Asia Street. But his best-known work cannot be found in our country, but in the occupied Gaza Strip. It's called Besieged Childhood, and it's a work of art no less than twenty meters high and fifteen meters wide.

‘’’We vechten tegen de bezetting met kunst. Onze graffiti moet hoop en vrede uitbeelden', vertelt Belal Khaled terwijl hij wat ongerust om zich heen kijkt. Hij moest al aan het werk zijn, om zijn muurschildering in de oude haven van Gent op tijd af te kunnen werken. De planning loopt wat vertraging op, en dat zag hij liever anders, want hij neemt zijn werk heel serieus.
We fight the occupation with art. Our graffiti should portray hope and peace', says Belal Khaled, looking around a bit worried. He had to be at work already, in order to finish his mural in the old port of Ghent in time. The planning is somewhat delayed, which he would rather see differently, because he takes his work very seriously.
