I have always been inspired by pre-Columbian art, its shamanic magic and mysticism. I decided to create a ritual mask sculpture according to the conventions of tribal art.
I have researched various pictures of masks and other artefacts of tribal art, esp. Mayan. Most of them were vintage and anonymous and belonged to museum collections. I tried to study styles of ornaments and motifs but yet it needs more time as this style of art is quite intricate and not fully explored.
In the making I focused on the Mayan art design, trying to reconstruct the indigenous motifs, ornaments and symbols (snake, jaguar, floral lines, spirals, etc.) and employed segmental structure (i.e.: face and vertical levels of ornaments) in the composition.
