For this project I had to redesign the visual identity for Meccano the British toy company. The brief took place over a 2 week period, in which we were required to research and Investigate the core beliefs of our given company and present our findings in the relevant formats.
After researching the company in depth I was able to build an understanding of what the company wanted to achieve with their product. I found that at the very core of the company was creativity, ingenuity and expression. Looking at the product as it is today I felt that this was not expressed to its full potential.
The identity is based around Blueprints and technical drawings, this is refelected in the bright blue colour that is featured throughout. This colour creates a bold and recognisable identity. The typographic logo is inspired by the meccano pieces with the rounded letterforms and recognisable holes in key areas of the type. Overall the identity was designed to celebrate being creative, by giving children the opportunity to plan ideas and approach their creativity in a logical way.
The packaging takes the form of a canvas drawstring bag that can be opened and used as a playmat. Once finished using the toy, the user can simply place pieces in the centre of the bag and pull the draw string tight to easily clear away the product whilst simultaneously creating an easy carry bag which is useful on the go. This design has the potential to be developed into a wider range of bag designs which can cater to different scenarios and tastes. This design was inspired by the old name for meccano 'Mechanics made easy' and is designed to make the playing experience fun and simple. A3 Blueprint sheets are also sold with the product so the user can draw up ideas and experiment with their creativity.
