I participated and chose to go with the brief set by Monotype in the D&AD New Awards Blood 2014.

Street papers are independent newspapers and magazines that operate on a social enterprise and self-help model. They provide an innovative solution to urban homelessness and unemployment. Founded in 1994, INSP (International Network of Street Papers) is a charity that supports and develops over 120 street paper projects in 40 countries, in 24 languages, with a combined readership of 6million per edition.

The creative challenge here is to pick one paper from the INSP network, I have chosen Streetvibes, Ohio, USA and develop a new typographic system for a local street paper that helps readers, sellers and the rest of the world see the connections between the familiar (the paper), the new (digital transactions and online media), and the very personal (the people who support themselves by selling the paper).

The intention of the redesigned typeface is to retain the ‘street style’ feel of the newspaper while suggesting a contemporary style. My objective was to connect the readers and the sellers in a typographic way. The marker rendering embodies the cardboard signs that the homeless typically use to send their message out.
