And Tango Makes Three — Book Redesign

And Tango Makes Three — Book Redesign

This is the book redesign I did for “And Tango Makes Three”, a bestselling true story written by Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell.

The story takes place in the penguin house at the Central Park Zoo, where two male chinstrap penguins named Roy and Silo were a little bit different from the others… but their desire for a family was the same. And with the help of a kindly zookeeper, Roy and Silo get the chance to welcome a baby penguin of their very own.

This was the first assignment I did for my Children’s Illustration class.

When you are illustrating a children’s book there are so many takeaways when it comes to the visual style and design of its characters. For example, in “And Tango Makes Three” I did these three different style approaches for Roy and Tango, with the idea that based on the one that worked the best I would create Silo afterwards… funny thing is that I ended up mixing all the three approaches to create the character design…

I picked Tango from option 1 and Roy from option 2 because I really liked the way Tango looked so fluffy and cute (just like a small ball of feathers, but then I decided to add flippers), and that the Roy stylization was quite accurate to how chinstrap penguins look in real life… and then Roy from option 3 helped me to create a hunky version of a penguin, which ended up being Silo. And that’s how this peculiar family was created.
