The past two summers, I spent time in Turkey and Egypt. Being in lands I had until now only dreamed of inspired me to pick up the pen and write about the worlds I was seeing. The culmination of these writings is a book I am currently writing called "Ruins of Empire, Ashes of Gold," which chronicles my journey in conjunction to the post-colonial history of Western Asia and North Africa. This article is one that I wrote and designed the layout of myself. I am currently working to publish it through the paper I write for, the Specter, an independent socialist newspaper affiliated with YDSA in Ann Arbor.
