How to Make a Sporran Pouch

How to make a sporran pouch?
It's not necessary to be of Scottish heritage to sport handmade sporrans. Sporrans can be useful bags, typically worn with kilts but can be worn with other clothes too. The first sporrans were filled with rations or weapons, however today they're packed with cell phones and keys for cars. You can wear your sporran on any belt made of leather. The sporran is constructed using a variety of materials like fur, leather or fabric. The sporran is completed in under an hour, and is an ideal craft for kids.
Easy Modern Sporran

Step 1
Make a sporran pattern on the surface of a poster board. It should measure 10-inches in length and 8 inches wide. Draw the bottom line so that it forms U, and extends upwards by 6 inches. Expand the lines by 4 inches along each side. Join the lines at the top. This creates your sporran fold. The top should be rounded and have an arch in the center of the top.

Step 2
Remove the pattern from the poster board, and trace it on the second poster board. Draw the bottom portion of the pattern of the sporran. The pattern should be six inches by eight inches. It is the design for the front and back of the sporran. Cut the pattern.

Step 3
Draw the pattern pieces on 2 pieces of genuine leather. Cut the leather pieces using the help of a circular cutter.

Step 4
Fold the front sporran piece in half vertically. Tape the edges together.

Step 5
Make holes in the front leather piece at intervals of half inch around the edges. Be sure that the holes run through each side of the piece and also that the holes aren't too close to the edges of the material. Untie the tape and then remove the piece of leather.

Step 6
Lay the leather on top of the back section. Align the edges. Use the permanent maker to draw the punch marks onto the back piece. Set the top piece aside.

Step 7
Punch holes into the back section of the leather.

Step 8
Cut two vertical slits in the center back piece of the sporran. The slits should be large enough so that your belt will slide through the sporran with ease.

Step 9
Lash the sporran together. Insert a leather shoelace cord through the top two side holes. Tie the leather into a knot.

Step 10
Insert the leather through the following front and back holes until you reach the final hole. Tie the leather to itself to finish it.

Step 11
Add a self-adhesive hook and loop fastener disc to the front inside flap and the center top of the front piece.
