Los Remotos + Cabalgata Cósmica

Rock poster for Los Remotos + Cabalgata Cósmica's gig in Barcelona. A3 Digital print.
Los Remotos are a 60's garage-punk band from Barcelona; its psychedelic touch separates them from the rest in such a crowded, mimetic scene. Like other garage-punk bands, most of their repertoire are covers; the lyrics are spanish, and that helps to make the difference.
Cabalgata Cósmica, from Valencia, are into proto-heavy psychedellic rock, inspired by late 60's/first 70's bands like Blue Cheer, Black Sabbath or The Stooges. Their lyrics are spanish too: such a curious fact in the "stoner rock comunity" where they're supposed to be involved.
Even though Cabalgata Cósmica were supposed to head the event, I thought that it would be unfair not to respect Los Remotos' background and career: some of their members were local heroes, formerly playing in seminal spanish garage bands like The Flashback 5. That's why I decided not to do a typical "Main band+Opening Band" layout.

Seeking for common bonds between the two bands, I choosed to focus on their spanish idiosyncrasy combining it with lysergic 60's cliché. Exploring a bunch of vintage graphic stuff, I found this lobby card of a mexican-peruvian late 60's, "Las Sicodélicas".

A litlle frame of a character lighting a cigarrete took my attention. I started sketching some kind of angelical figure, using the promoters' logo as a holy aura, then surrounding the character with a wing-like psychedellic lettering.
The main lettering was completely hand-drawn. I warped each band's logos, then added a classic "bell-bottom" typeface for the information of musical style and hometown.
Inking process was very rough and loose. I didn't wanted to give a sharp finishing for two reasons. First, I liked to give some transparency which allowed me to show background textures. Second: complete gig info would be given very close to dead-line, and promoters logo was a sharp-edged vector art file. I choosed to give a low end finishing to the whole lettering work, in order to combine vector art with the hand-drawn stuff.
Main figure and background had a strong layered photo manipullation. I scanned the little frame on a very high resollution just to keep the dot screen from his original source, then used it to create moiré effects and vibrating color shades.
Finally, mismatching registration was simulated when adding the lettering. Three different layers with a slight transparency allowed me to integrate the bitmap graphics with the textured background. Detail shows the materic richness of the poster's surface.
After a first color print, promoters asked me for a second grayscaled issue. Turning it into a B/W image surprisingly changed it into some kind of 60's fanzine cover.
ENJOY!
