The Hemp Chair & Lamp

THE HEMP CHAIR & LAMP - School project with Stina Löfgren at Malmö University

The Hemp Chair is a chair only built from hemp-based materials. The boards used are called hemp boards. They have approximately the same properties as OSB, but they are lighter and stronger.

The idea was to create a chair of only one material. A chair that does not need to be dismantled if it is recycled. Hemp is interesting from an environmental standpoint because it grows quickly and needs less water than many other plants.

The propories of the boards lay a foundation for a simple design that can be shipped in flat packs. Meanwhile, the chair has a clear and personal character. The chair is held together with hemp rope that is tied around wedges.

The parts for the lamp are manufactured using leftovers from the chair. The same mounting method is used to lock the parts together. The armature comes from a scrapped lamp found in a dumpster. All metal parts has been sanded to give the lamp a character of tis own. No new paint has been applied to minimize the usage of material.

The lamp was built to demonstrate that rejected products can get new life instead of being thrown away.
